Ask customers for extra details
Short answer
When you make a payment link, you can ask for your customer’s name and phone number, and up to three questions of your own. Their answers are saved on each payment. In this article
Set it up
On New payment link:
- Under Also collect, tick Their name or Their phone number. Their email is always collected, for the receipt.
- Under Questions, add up to three. For each, type the Question, and choose the Answer: Text, A number or One of a list. For a list, type the options, one per line. Tick Optional if they can leave it blank.
Then press Create payment link. The dashboard cannot change a link’s questions afterwards, so make a new link, or ask your developer, who can change them through the API.
Where the answers go
Open the payment under Payments. The answers to your questions are under Your metadata, as payment_link_fields. They are also in the metadata column of the payments export.
Good questions to ask
- A booking date, a boat name or a table number.
- A size or a colour, as one of a list.
- Anything you would otherwise have to message them about after they paid.
Never ask for a card number or a password.
